This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. The VA North Texas Health Care System is seeking a highly qualified Psychiatrist to join the Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (RRTP), a dynamic multidisciplinary program providing comprehensive mental health and addiction treatment services to Veterans. This residential program specializes in recovery-focused care for Veterans experiencing addictions and substance use disorders.
The incumbent must possess strong skills in general outpatient psychiatry and addiction psychiatry, with demonstrated experience in diagnostic evaluations, pharmacotherapy, and psychotherapy. The role requires competency in treating a wide range of clinical conditions such as substance use disorders; mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders; post-traumatic stress disorder; and psychiatric conditions prevalent among elderly Veterans.
This position functions as part of a multidisciplinary mental health team at the Dallas VA Medical Center and collaborates closely with all residential programs across VANTHCS. The incumbent is encouraged to engage in the education and training of medical students, psychiatry residents, and addiction psychiatry fellows.
Responsibilities also include providing clinical supervision to Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and other allied health professionals, and serving as a collaborating physician when appropriate.
The Mental Health Service at VANTHCS delivers a full continuum of psychiatric and psychosocial services, including general adult and geriatric psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, trauma-focused programs, substance use specialty care, psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery services, homelessness programs, peer support services, opiate replacement therapy, intensive case management, vocational rehabilitation, domiciliary-based services, and inpatient mental health care.
The facility supports active research initiatives in addiction psychiatry, post-traumatic stress disorder, disaster psychiatry, mood disorders, and homelessness. It also hosts extensive clinical training programs for medical students, psychiatry residents and fellows, psychology trainees, social workers, and nursing professionals. Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated.
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
