Job Summary

This position is located in the Engineering Service department at the Margaret C. Corbin VA Campus, in Manhattan, NY. The Pipefitter will make safety and preventive maintenance inspections and repairs of utility systems and equipment in accordance with VA regulations and National Codes. The work includes working with pipes and fittings from a range of high pressure to low pressure steam.

If you are a current, permanent employee of the Veterans Affairs located at the NY Harbor HCS, you can apply from our internal posting: https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/883201400 Duties include, but are not limited to: Installing and operating high- and low-pressure piping systems, plumbing systems, and related equipment (such as steam heating, steam generators, vacuum systems, radiators and circulating pumps).

Installing plumbing fixtures such as sinks, water closets, drinking fountains, hot water storage tanks, and hot water producing equipment such as dishwashers and laundry equipment. Aligning pipes, valves, fittings and joints for accurate match. Figuring pressures and fixtures units within a system and ensuring that piping, valves, fittings and equipment are proper for the work.

Interpreting and applying building plans and blueprints to use shop mathematics to lay out angles, arcs and circles. Performing work assigned orally and through written or electronic work orders based on building plans and blueprints. Determining the proper placement and elevation to install steam generators, vacuum and condensate pumps and radiators.

Planning and laying out the installation, modification and repair of new and existing piping systems, plumbing systems and equipment. Laying out and installing piping, risers and flexible branches at the proper level and incline. Planning and laying out the needed routing, placement, pitch, incline and elevation of systems and equipment. Using power tools common to the pipefitting trade, such as drills, grinders, pipe threaders and cutters. Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: M-F, 8Am-4:40pm Position Description Title/PD#: Pipefitter/PD # 1312-A Physical Requirements: Works from ladders, scaffolds, platforms and in cramped hard to reach places, which requires incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Required to lift carry and set up equipment, heavy pipes and machinery weighting up to 50 pounds. Receives assistance on items weighting over 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside (in all types of inclement weather) and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. Occasionally required to work in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. Is exposed to injurious chemicals, fumes and infectious disease when replacing sections of drainage lines. is frequently exposed to the possibility of scalding, uncomfortable heat conditions, strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections.

May be exposed to the possibility of broken bones.
