Job Summary

This position is located in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of War for Health Affairs, (OASW(HA)), Office of the Under Secretary of War for Personnel and Readiness (OUSW(P&R)), and is responsible for the effective execution of the medical mission to provide and maintain readiness, medical services, and support to members of the Armed Forces during military operations, and to provide medical services and support to the Armed Forces, their family members, and others entitled to medical care.

Key Responsibilities

Incumbent typical work assignments may include the following: Developing policies, budgets, and execution plans for Defense Health Agency (DHA) programs and Military Department (MILDEP) medical readiness operations. This includes providing oversight for DHA support to Combatant Commands during national emergencies and large-scale combat operations.

Crafting legislative proposals and managing responses to inquiries from Congress, the media, the Government Accountability Office (GAO), and senior Department of War leadership regarding medical contingency readiness. Evaluating combat health support programs and medical readiness capabilities through established governance reviews, such as the Health Readiness Council, to ensure effective medical response collaboration.

Establishing requirements for operational risk analysis and policy-related reporting. This focuses on critical areas like rapid surge support, contingency manpower, materiel distribution, and medical evacuation.

Providing expert guidance to top-level leadership (including the Joint Staff Surgeon and various Assistant Secretaries) on combat-ready medical force initiatives, and translating medical scenario analyses into resourcing recommendations for strategic planning documents.
