Job Summary

The Registered Nurse - Peri-Anesthesia PACU (RN) provides specialized care across the peri-anesthesia continuum, including pre-anesthesia, Post-anesthesia Phase I and II, and extended recovery. The RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care for patients undergoing surgical, diagnostic, or therapeutic procedures requiring sedation or anesthesia, using advanced knowledge of physiology related to anesthesia techniques and surgical interventions.

Key Responsibilities

The RN is responsible and accountable for all aspects of the nursing process when providing or supervising patient care. Coordinates care with an emphasis on patient education, self-management, and satisfaction across the continuum of care. Administers medications and procedures according to established policies. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to influence positive care outcomes.

Demonstrates knowledge and active participation in unit-level quality improvement and customer service initiatives. Duties include but not limited to the following: Assesses and prepare patients for procedures appropriately. Performs clinical assessment of the patient and readily recognizes contraindication for anesthesia and/or surgical intervention.

Applies the appropriate post sedation scoring and assesses the patient's postoperative status to include cardiovascular and respiratory systems and airway management needs, neurological system, hemodynamic stability, pain, and comfort needs and mental status, implementing appropriate interventions to maintain or return all physiological system to baseline or above.

Maintains knowledge of current American Society of Peri anesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) standards, VHA Directive, and service level standard operating procedures. Responsible for ensuring comprehensive documenting of all phases of care and is timely, complete, and accurate in the electronic health record. May be required to perform on-call duties. Preferred Experience: 2 years of critical care experience preferred.
