Job Summary

Critical Care Nurse Educator is directly responsible/ accountable for the development and delivery of Patient Care Service's professional growth, employee development, and education programs throughout all Critical Care units within the Fayetteville NC VA Coastal Healthcare System to include the Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department. He/she will foster critical thinking skills in the critical care staff and evaluate for improvements and process outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

The Clinical Nurse Educator demonstrates clinical teaching and facilitation of clinical skills in the critical care learner. Both Staff Development Educators and unit-based Educators will be responsible for the orientation of new employees, evaluation of their progress in the orientation process, and for developing and implementing a learning plan for improving identified deficiencies.

He/she assumes responsibility for both the initiation and the process of completing annual staff competencies. He/she works collaboratively with Patient Care Services leadership and all Services within the Medical Center in the development and implementation of Patient Care Services and facility-wide.

The incumbent actively participates in workshops/continuing education programs designed for career development/ advancement and gaining evidence based best-practice knowledge to facilitate teaching/learning for Critical Care staff.

Major duties include:- At the unit level, he/she is responsible for the individualized employee orientation, development, coordination, and implementation of a variety of education programs; assessment and maintenance of staff competency and involvement in quality improvement and research utilization to enhance the care of the critically ill patient- The Critical Care Educator will be responsible for the initiation of Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO), ensuring learning opportunities for new hires, and monitoring progresses throughout the orientation process.- He/she will assume responsibility for the initiation and process for completing annual staff competencies.- Works collaboratively with Patient Care Service leadership and all Services within the medical center and its affiliating CBOCs in the development and implementation of Patient Care Service and facility-wide educational programs and initiatives.

- The incumbent will actively participate in workshop/continuing education programs designed for career advancement as well as function in classroom teaching environments, clinical arenas, and as a group facilitator during training and implementation of changes in nursing related computer applications.

He/she will impart high levels of knowledge, technical skills, and critical thinking skills in the following areas of practice: Care of the critically ill patient in both the Emergency Department (ED) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Emergency Severity Index Scoring education and training o Emergency Department Information System (EDIS) Operation, management, and maintenance of mechanical ventilation Transvenous Pacemakers o Highly technical hemodynamic monitoring devices Titration of vasoactive drips o Skills and knowledge of how to apply highly complex care within a patient-centric care environment Team competence Patient safety competencies Evidence-based practice approaches to moral distress in the critical care environment End of Life care in the Critical Care environment o Assessment, prevention, and management of pain, anxiety, agitation, delirium, and sedation, including anesthesia recovery Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) training Tele Stroke competency and training in both the ED and ICU.

Utilization of Tele ICU for critically ill patients in the Critical Care complex.
