The Operating Room (OR) Registered Nurse (RN) works effectively with others to initiate and lead interdisciplinary groups and establishes relationships with professionals on the healthcare team. They are accountable for patient outcomes resulting from the nursing care for the patient undergoing a surgical/ invasive procedure. The focus is on individual growth and development in practice with increased levels of self-direction.
Duties of this position include but are not limited to: Evaluates and documents nursing care delivered to the surgical patient and revises plan of care as necessary based on continued assessment during intraoperative phase according to peri-operative standards. Evaluates the patient's response to nursing interventions and modifies the peri operative nursing care plan to achieve the desired outcome.
Expected to function proficiently in both the circulator and scrub role within the OR an to be competent in all surgical specialties served. Identifies potential problems and seeks resolution to prevent unfavorable outcomes to the surgical patient during surgical intervention. Use creative approach to enhance quality of patient care and productivity or providers. Evaluates practice in an ongoing process, based on best evidence.
Provides peers with informal constructive feedback for improvement. Fosters a safe and supportive environment conducive to the professional development of healthcare professionals. Acts as consultant in clinical practice hospital wide. Competency will be initially validated during the orientation period and annually thereafter. Validation may be achieved by observation of performance, written reports of performance or verbal feedback to the Nurse Manager.
VA Careers - Nurses Performs and takes part in the collaboration process prior to surgery to ensure proper equipment and supplies are procured, operating room is prepared, x-rays and test are obtained etc. Supervises activities in the operating room during surgical procedures to ensure that sterile technique and the integrity of the sterile field are maintained. Provides assistance to anesthesia care provider as required during the procedure.
Prioritize and organize patient care related activities in the operating room assigned so that the scheduled cases are completed in an efficient and timely manner. Perform simple tasks in the clean preparation area as needed. Administers therapeutic measures as prescribed by the physician to include, but not limited to, medication administration, intravenous fluids, treatments and maintains those measures taken which are ongoing in nature.
Manages the patient's specimens in the appropriate manner, administers medications safely and correctly, performs interventions to maintain the patient's wound, and performs interventions to protect the patient from surgical site infection Participates in the development, updating and evaluation of standards of care and quality improvement monitoring.
Collaborate with other health care professionals and service providers to ensure optimal patient care in the Operating Room or designated area.
