Job Summary

**Open only to current permanent employees of the Oklahoma City VA Health Care system** The Float Pool Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients and oversight of licensed vocational nurses/nursing assistants, as appropriate to the setting. The nurse will assist in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies and providing quality improvement and outcomes utilization consultation.

Key Responsibilities

To maintain status as 'active' intermittent nursing staff requirements are: Must work a minimum of three shifts per month to include one weekend shift where there is a need in the facility, which may include off tour hours; except as approved by supervisor for extenuating circumstances. Intermittent personnel will be required to work on major summer holiday (Memorial Day, July 4 or Labor Day) and one major winter holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's Day).

Off tours include evenings, nights, and all hours on weekends and holidays. Absenteeism/cancellation of two (2) or more scheduled tours within eight (8) weeks may result in corrective action. Intermittent RN Nursing staff may serve as charge nurse after completing initial orientation and charge nurse orientation.

Per VA Handbook 5005/57, Part II, Chapter 3, an intermittent employee may not be scheduled for employment which will exceed 1820 hours or seven-eighths of full-time employment during a service year. Per VA Handbook 5007/42.

Part Ill, Chapter 5, periodic step increases for an intermittent employee: The waiting period requirements for intermittent nursing employees is 260 days of credible service in a pay status over a period of not less than 52 calendar weeks, where by 1 day of credit is given for each day of service in a pay status.

Duties include, but are not limited to: Provides competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients and oversight of licensed vocational nurses/nursing assistants, as appropriate to the setting. Provides direct and indirect nursing care to patients in multiple care units. Integrates knowledge, skills, abilities, and judgment and is self-directed in goal setting for managing complex situations for varying areas of nursing.

Demonstrates the ability to cope with and manage competing priorities. Demonstrates competence in practice and decision-making, deliberate planning, and critical thinking skills for all patient care areas included within Resource Pool/Float assignments. Fosters a safe and supportive environment conducive to the professional development of healthcare professionals. Contributes professional nursing perspective in discussions with the interdisciplinary team.

Partners with others to effect change and produce optimal outcomes. Supports colleagues through knowledge sharing to provide safe, quality nursing care. Participates in activities and strategies to sustain evidence-based-practice. Identifies care needs between assigned units and reports findings within Shared Governance Structure and management.
