Job Summary

This vacancy is for a GS-0018-11, Safety and Occupational Health Specialist located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), Deputy Commandant for Mission Support, Director of Operational Logistics, Base, Facilities Engineering Department, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Key Responsibilities

You will serve as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist and be responsible for identifying and evaluating risk involving a wide variety of work environments and occupations; certifying work environments where local guidelines or standards require assurance that specific and predetermined safeguards or practices are present prior to work beginning; conducting inspections of assigned organizations industrial facilities, aircraft operations review planning proposals for compliance with safety standards; determining compliance with safety; investigating employee complaints regarding hazardous work operations and conditions, and providing guidance, recommendations, and assistance to supervisors and employees concerning established safety methods and techniques..

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Ensuring Safety and Occupational Health program is designed effectively to eliminate or control hazards, minimize human injury and property and productivity loss due to harmful contact incidents. Determining compliance with safety and occupational health standards and regulations.

Preparing safety guides and internal instructions for low safety and normal safety risks encountered in an assigned area of responsibility. Investigating employee complaints concerning hazardous work operations and conditions Issuing citations to employers and proposing financial penalties for violations detected. Performing a full range of inspections in a variety of establishments where a single inspection often identifies hazards ranging from serious to minor in severity.

Planning each inspection, reviewing work processes, practices and conditions characteristic of the site to be inspected, and recommending measures and methods to correct safety deficiencies, to include any equipment that requires modification to implement safety improvements. Investigating mishaps resulting in fatalities or injuries.

This position does not have a positive education requirement. If course content cannot be easily identified from the title of the course as listed on your transcript, you must submit an official course description from the college/university that reflects the content at the time the course was taken.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet Federal qualification requirements if you can show that your foreign education is comparable to education received in accredited educational institutions in the United States. To receive this credit, you must submit evidence of equivalency as provided by a credentialling evaluation service. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence with your application.
