The Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) - Chronic Pain Management primarily functions to provide pain services to veterans in support of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) as part of the Pain Management Team (i.e., PMT).
Duties for this position include, but are not limited to: Performs consultations, including history and physical examinations during in-person, telephone and virtual encounters. Provides ongoing outpatient care for assigned patients in accordance to VHA policies and evidence-based treatment guidelines. Screens outpatients to determine need for further care. Prescribes medications within defined scope of practice. Orders diagnostic studies. (e.g. x-rays, lab tests, ECG).
Initiates and expedites requests for consultations and scheduling special tests and studies. Enters notes on procedures performed for which the NP is responsible. Provides education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs. Supports a high functioning Pain Committee that includes stakeholders from across the facility, and supporting subcommittees, task forces/work groups as indicated.
Supports OSI reviews, data-based risk reviews for opioid-exposed patients (including Stratification Tool for Opioid Risk Mitigation (STORM) data-based reviews), and other interdisciplinary pain care forums. Actively treats pain complaints in complex cases alongside other pain staff, in accordance to the VHA Stepped Care Model of Pain. Provides coverage and receives coverage from other pain care staff during times of staff leave.
