The Electrician works in the Engineering Electrical/Electronic shop. The work is at two divisions of the Lexington VAMC, normally assigned to one division, but is subject to work at the other division at any given time dependent upon work load.
Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs continuous operation of primary voltages up to 12,470/13,800 volts and secondary voltages up to 120/480 volts distribution systems, and all electric circuits throughout the hospital. Installs new circuit breaker panels, new circuits, wire, lights, underground cable, transformers, and conduit for telephone lines, etc.
Makes calibration and adjustments to manufacturer's specifications with the greatest efficiency to prevent breakdown in function. Studies manuals, guides, schematics, codes, technical electric books, technical magazines, and detailed manufacturer's instructions. and other publications in order to keep current and abreast of changes in his field. Reads and interprets all electrical schematics, blueprints, and specifications.
Follows computerized schedules and outline inspection points to be covered. Troubleshooting and diagnosing a problem to calibration and adjustments to manufacturer's specifications to prevent breakdown in function. Preforms major and minor maintenance and repairs while inspecting and requests work orders for time consuming repairs. Installs electrical systems without the aid of blueprints, sketches or specifications.
Performs preventive maintenance inspections and follow-up work as required by current performance standards. Uses a variety of test equipment such as multi-meters, voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, mega-ohmmeters, etc. in diagnosing trouble in the various systems. Follows safety regulations and procedures to prevent injury to him and others. Preforms work in poorly ventilated areas and under strenuous conditions. Works in conditions that will require them to be physically fit.
This includes lifting heavy fixtures, bending conduit, climbing ladders, bending, stooping, working in cramped places for extended periods of time, and often working in very hot or cold areas. Adheres to rules and regulation pertaining to working hours, leave, breaks, lunch periods and other specified requirements set forth by the VAMC.
