Job Summary

This position is located at the Salisbury VA Medical Center, organizationally aligned within the Facilities Management Service, in Salisbury, North Carolina under the Construction Crew. This is a full performance, journeyman level, Maintenance Mechanic that reports directly to the Supervisor. The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for performing carpentry, masonry, plastering, painting, roofing and other basic trade duties to improve building maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

Major duties include, but are not limited to: Construct, install, repair, and modify wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness.

Installs, maintains and repairs a variety of roofing materials (i.e., asphalt, shingles, tile, roofing, sheet metal, flashing, etc.) Constructing and repairing a wide variety of structural items such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, ceilings, staircases, door and window frames, etc. Installation and removal of exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, tile, cement, stone, wood and laminate.

Skill in the operation of general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment and be able to produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance. Reads and interpret technical instruction manuals, troubleshooting and operating guides, installation manuals. Plans and lays out complex work in accordance with drawings, sketches, blueprints and own knowledge of construction.

Must keep up to date on rules, regulations, product information and health care practices, such as "Universal Precautions, Material Safety Data Sheets", burn permits, lock and tag out procedures, etc. Use a variety of hand tools, power tools, and stationary shop tools. Maintains all tools in proper working condition by sharpening, adjusting, cleaning, lubricating, replacing belts, etc.

Tools, supplies, storage area and work carts used within course of work must be well maintained, free from clutter, serviceable and meet all service and OSHA requirements. Selects materials and obtains replacement parts by comparison with the part to be replaced, or by reference to supply lists and manufacturers' catalogs. Oversees the requisition of materials, tools, and equipment as necessary to perform assigned duties.

Plans the materials, tools, and techniques needed for completing work assignments. Work Schedule: Full time, Monday - Thursday, 12:00 pm - 10:30 pm (Construction Crew) Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD50057A Physical Requirements: Requires standing for extended periods of time while operating machinery. The work involves considerable walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crawling, and climbing on ladders, scaffolding, and rooftops.

Lifts, carries or moves materials weighing up to 45 kilograms (100 pounds). Uses assistance or lifting devices for heavier items. During normal day-to-day operations, individuals will be required to perform grasping, fine hand manipulation, reaching above shoulder height.

Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors which may require exposure to a variety of weather conditions and environments (i.e, excess humidity, chemicals and solvents, fumes, dust and noise). May perform some duties of position on patient wards, within storage areas, on facility grounds or within sub-basement locations. May be exposed to moderate-to-high noise from machinery in shop areas, dirt, dust, fumes and unpleasant odors.

Hazards of cuts, scrapes, bruises, falling from ladders and scaffolds, burns from asphalt are present. Protective devices, as needed, such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves are required. Clothing may become soiled or damaged. Possess knowledge and ability to work in hospital, health care, and industrial environments in a manner as not to endanger occupants or structure.

Endangerment could be in the form of chemical, housekeeping, physical hazards, barriers to egress, or medical condition of patients. Remains up to date about rules, regulations, product information and health care practices, such as: "Universal Precautions, Material Safety Data Sheets", burn permits, lock out and tag out procedures, etc. Completes all required computer training within allotted time frames.
