Job Summary

You will serve as a Maintenance Worker with the National Park Service, Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, in Strong City, Kansas. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as permanent appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work for approximately 9 months in a pay status, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year..

Key Responsibilities

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Performs carpentry repairs of limited difficulty to buildings and quarters. Constructs, installs, repairs and replaces such items as doors, shelves, supply racks, hardware, frame structures, windows, trim and cabinets.

Performs painting of limited difficulty using brush and roller according to written work orders or verbalinstructions on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trashbarrels. Performs plumbing repairs of limited difficulty such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaces faucet washers; unplugs drains using a plunger; replaces liquid petroleum gas bottles.

Utilizes a variety of materials, tools, and equipment associated with the plumbing trade. Performs masonry work of limited difficulty such as assisting in the maintenance, repair, and stabilizationof historic sites built of stone, mortar, or adobe and/or contemporary buildings, features or structures. Performs routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances.

Operates a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work. Operates a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment not requiring special rigging. Performs custodial and minor building repairs and maintenance.

There is no substitution of education for experience for Federal Wage System (FWS) positions.
