Pierce County is a county of Washington with 930,319 residents. Its economy produced $64,941 million in 2024 (ranked #2 of 39 counties) and had 333,492 jobs with an average annual pay of $70,395 (#7 for pay). The unemployment rate was 5.1% in 2026M09. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA metropolitan area (central county).
Pierce County produced about $64,941 million of goods and services in 2024, which is 7.6% of the combined output of the 39 counties of Washington that BEA reports (about 11.9% of the state's population lives here), and ranks it 2nd of 39 on that measure. Per resident that is $69,805, 36% below the state average; the average for all counties of the state taken together is $109,519. In current dollars output grew 5.7% from 2023 to 2024, before adjusting for inflation. The gap between its output rank (2nd) and its output-per-resident rank (15th) shows that population is large relative to the value of what is produced here.
BLS counts 333,492 jobs located in Pierce County on average in 2024, spread over 20,820 employer sites (about 16 jobs per site). That is 0.36 jobs for every resident, close to the 0.35 of the typical county in Washington, which tells you whether the county is a place people mostly commute to for work or a place they commute from. The average annual pay per job was $70,395, 25% below the average of all counties in the state ($70,395 against $94,174). Average pay is total wages divided by jobs, so it is pulled up by high earners and counts part-time jobs as whole jobs; it is not the pay of a typical worker. The number of jobs rose 0.8% from 2023 to 2024.
The three largest private industries are health care and social assistance (20.7% of private jobs, $73,448 a year on average), retail trade (13.2% of private jobs, $48,401 a year on average), accommodation and food services (10.8% of private jobs, $31,104 a year on average). Together they hold 44.7% of private-sector jobs. Among industries with at least 3% of jobs, the best paying is professional and technical services at $93,627 a year, followed by wholesale trade ($84,715). The county is specialised in an industry: transportation and warehousing (1.4 times the US share, 20,071 jobs). A location quotient above 1 means an industry employs a larger share of workers here than in the whole country, so these are the industries where local employers compete hardest for skills. Several of the biggest employers pay well below the county average: retail trade ($48,401), accommodation and food services ($31,104). Jobs there are plentiful but the pay is lower than the headline average suggests.
In 2026M09 the unemployment rate in Pierce County was 5.1%, 18% above the average of the state's counties (5.1% against 4.3%). The labour force (people working or looking for work) numbered 499,802. Over the last 12 months it ranged from 5.1% (2025M09) to 6.4% (2026M01); the latest month is preliminary and BLS revises it. These county rates are not seasonally adjusted, so compare the same month across years.
The median household income was $99,564 (ACS 2020–2024), about the same as the state median ($99,564 against $98,141). The guide covers 10 cities with this as the main county: Tacoma, South Hill, Lakewood, Puyallup, Parkland, Graham, University Place, Spanaway. Open any of them for rent, home values, commuting and climate. Within the county, median rent runs from $1,525 in Lakewood to $2,386 in Frederickson, so where you live matters as much as which county you pick.
