Skagit County is a county of Washington with 131,328 residents. Its economy produced $9,574 million in 2024 (ranked #11 of 39 counties) and had 53,884 jobs with an average annual pay of $65,374 (#11 for pay). The unemployment rate was 3.7% in 2026M09. It is part of the Mount Vernon-Anacortes, WA metropolitan area (central county).
Skagit County produced about $9,574 million of goods and services in 2024, which is 1.1% of the combined output of the 39 counties of Washington that BEA reports (about 1.7% of the state's population lives here), and ranks it 11th of 39 on that measure. Per resident that is $72,903, 33% below the state average; the average for all counties of the state taken together is $109,519. In current dollars output grew 9.2% from 2023 to 2024, before adjusting for inflation.
BLS counts 53,884 jobs located in Skagit County on average in 2024, spread over 3,856 employer sites (about 14 jobs per site). That is 0.41 jobs for every resident, above the 0.35 of the typical county in Washington, which tells you whether the county is a place people mostly commute to for work or a place they commute from. The average annual pay per job was $65,374, 31% below the average of all counties in the state ($65,374 against $94,174). Average pay is total wages divided by jobs, so it is pulled up by high earners and counts part-time jobs as whole jobs; it is not the pay of a typical worker. The number of jobs rose 2.8% from 2023 to 2024.
The three largest private industries are retail trade (16.2% of private jobs, $43,968 a year on average), manufacturing (15.2% of private jobs, $77,769 a year on average), health care and social assistance (13.1% of private jobs, $55,005 a year on average). Together they hold 44.5% of private-sector jobs. Among industries with at least 3% of jobs, the best paying is professional and technical services at $88,379 a year, followed by construction ($88,173). The county is specialised in several industries: agriculture, forestry, fishing (5.4 times the US share, 2,366 jobs); construction (1.5 times the US share, 4,346 jobs); manufacturing (1.4 times the US share, 6,308 jobs). A location quotient above 1 means an industry employs a larger share of workers here than in the whole country, so these are the industries where local employers compete hardest for skills. Several of the biggest employers pay well below the county average: retail trade ($43,968), accommodation and food services ($31,555), agriculture, forestry, fishing ($43,312). Jobs there are plentiful but the pay is lower than the headline average suggests.
In 2026M09 the unemployment rate in Skagit County was 3.7%, 14% below the average of the state's counties (3.7% against 4.3%). The labour force (people working or looking for work) numbered 60,255. Over the last 12 months it ranged from 3.7% (2026M09) to 5.6% (2025M12); the latest month is preliminary and BLS revises it. These county rates are not seasonally adjusted, so compare the same month across years.
The median household income was $89,263 (ACS 2020–2024), 9% below the state median ($89,263 against $98,141). The guide covers 2 cities with this as the main county: Mount Vernon, Anacortes. Open any of them for rent, home values, commuting and climate. Within the county, median rent runs from $1,405 in Mount Vernon to $1,702 in Anacortes, so where you live matters as much as which county you pick.
