Damascus is a city in Maryland with 17,640 residents. The median household earns $158,883 a year and the median rent is $1,792 a month, which is 13.5% of the median household income. It is part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV metropolitan area, where BLS counts 3,136,190 jobs.
How Damascus compares. Among the 80 largest places in Maryland, Damascus is #78 by population, #5 for homeownership (#1 = highest), #75 for long commutes (#1 = fewest), #7 for household income (#1 = highest). Its county, Montgomery County, is #1 of 24 counties for average pay ($94,473).
Damascus has 17,640 residents (ACS 2020–2024), about 0.3% of the population of Maryland. It covers 14 square miles of land, which works out to roughly 1,239 people per square mile. The median age is 41.5, 5% older than the state median (41.5 against 39.4). It is a census-designated place: a community the Census Bureau counts as a unit, without a city government of its own, so services such as police, roads and zoning usually come from the county.
The median gross rent is $1,792 a month (rent plus utilities), 5% above the state median ($1,792 against $1,705). Over a year that is 13.5% of the median household income. US housing guidance treats housing as affordable when it takes 30% of income or less, so the typical household is under that line. The median home value is $528,400, which is 3.3 times the median household income ($158,883); a ratio under 4 usually means ownership is within reach for many households. 90.1% of households own their home, 33% above the state average (90.1% against 67.6%).
The Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV metropolitan area has 3,136,190 jobs in the BLS wage survey, and the median pay across all occupations is $71,060 a year, 39% above the national median ($71,060 against $50,980). The biggest occupation groups are business and financial operations (369,190 jobs, median $105,260); management (319,760 jobs, median $165,010); office and administrative support (290,050 jobs, median $53,250). The area is most specialised in legal (2.6 times) and computer and mathematical (2.2 times), where the share of workers is well above the national share. The best-paying groups with at least 5,000 jobs are legal ($175,070) and management ($165,010). In 2026M09 the unemployment rate of Montgomery County was 3.2%. 71.7% of residents aged 16 and over are in the labour force. The city lies in Montgomery County; its jobs, pay by industry and GDP are on the county page.
Among workers, 62.1% drive alone, 1.5% use public transit, 0.7% walk, 26.5% work from home. 37.1% of workers commute 45 minutes or more, 53% above the state average (37.1% against 24.2%). Remote work is more common than in the state as a whole, which widens the set of employers a resident can work for without moving.
49.0% of adults aged 25 and over hold a bachelor's degree or higher, 13% above the state share (49.0% against 43.5%). 19.6% of residents were born outside the United States, 18% above the state share (19.6% against 16.6%). The poverty rate is 3.7%, 61% below the state rate (3.7% against 9.4%).
The warmest month is Jul, averaging 77°F (24.9°C), and the coolest is Jan at 29°F (-1.6°C). About 1,124 mm (44 inches) of precipitation falls in a year; May is the wettest month (117 mm) and Feb the driest (68 mm). These values come from NASA satellite-based climatology on a grid of about 50 km, so they describe the wider area, not a weather station in the city.
Closest cities in this guide: Clarksburg (5 miles, rent 39% higher); Montgomery Village (6 miles, rent 7% higher); Germantown (8 miles, rent 14% higher); Gaithersburg (8 miles, rent 15% higher). Rent differences are against Damascus; use the Compare tab to put any two cities side by side.
