Morris County is a county of New Jersey with 514,528 residents. Its economy produced $74,395 million in 2024 (ranked #4 of 21 counties) and had 298,824 jobs with an average annual pay of $101,208 (#2 for pay). The unemployment rate was 3.5% in 2026M09. It is part of the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ metropolitan area (central county).
Morris County produced about $74,395 million of goods and services in 2024, which is 8.8% of the combined output of the 21 counties of New Jersey that BEA reports (about 5.5% of the state's population lives here), and ranks it 4th of 21 on that measure. Per resident that is $144,589, 60% above the state average; the average for all counties of the state taken together is $90,541. In current dollars output grew 4.3% from 2023 to 2024, before adjusting for inflation.
BLS counts 298,824 jobs located in Morris County on average in 2024, spread over 18,002 employer sites (about 17 jobs per site). That is 0.58 jobs for every resident, above the 0.40 of the typical county in New Jersey, which tells you whether the county is a place people mostly commute to for work or a place they commute from. The average annual pay per job was $101,208, 27% above the average of all counties in the state ($101,208 against $79,933). Average pay is total wages divided by jobs, so it is pulled up by high earners and counts part-time jobs as whole jobs; it is not the pay of a typical worker. The number of jobs rose 0.7% from 2023 to 2024.
The three largest private industries are health care and social assistance (16.5% of private jobs, $78,250 a year on average), professional and technical services (14.7% of private jobs, $168,298 a year on average), retail trade (10.1% of private jobs, $46,515 a year on average). Together they hold 41.3% of private-sector jobs. Among industries with at least 3% of jobs, the best paying is management of companies at $213,945 a year, followed by finance and insurance ($188,811). The county is specialised in several industries: management of companies (2.4 times the US share, 11,963 jobs); professional and technical services (1.9 times the US share, 39,699 jobs); finance and insurance (1.5 times the US share, 17,947 jobs). A location quotient above 1 means an industry employs a larger share of workers here than in the whole country, so these are the industries where local employers compete hardest for skills. Several of the biggest employers pay well below the county average: retail trade ($46,515), administrative and waste services ($63,051), accommodation and food services ($32,572). Jobs there are plentiful but the pay is lower than the headline average suggests.
In 2026M09 the unemployment rate in Morris County was 3.5%, 15% below the average of the state's counties (3.5% against 4.1%). The labour force (people working or looking for work) numbered 276,643. Over the last 12 months it ranged from 3.3% (2026M04) to 4.8% (2025M09); the latest month is preliminary and BLS revises it. These county rates are not seasonally adjusted, so compare the same month across years.
