Greater Boston has no single legal definition. In this guide it means Suffolk, Middlesex and Norfolk counties, which hold Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Waltham, Burlington, Lexington, Quincy and Newton, along the Route 128 and Interstate 495 belts. The research, health care and education employers of Boston and Cambridge share one labour market with the suburbs. Metro-level statistics cover the Boston–Cambridge–Newton metro area, which also includes other counties.
The core counties had 3,153,568 residents in 2020–2024 (ACS) and 1,986,240 jobs on average in 2024 (BLS QCEW), with an average annual pay of $114,928 per job. Their combined GDP was about $507 billion in 2024 (BEA, current dollars), which is $160,616 per resident. The unemployment rate was 3.9% in 2026M09 (BLS, not seasonally adjusted).

Companies whose headquarters Wikipedia places in a city of this region, with the headcount and revenue printed in their infobox and the year of each figure. Employees are global; revenue is the company's own reported revenue. Subsidiaries of another company in the list and companies whose infobox headquarters is outside the region are left out to avoid double counting, so well-known brands that are owned by a larger group do not appear on their own.
