Loudoun County is a county of Virginia with 432,998 residents. Its economy produced $44,855 million in 2024 (ranked #2 of 133 counties) and had 198,113 jobs with an average annual pay of $84,788 (#7 for pay). The unemployment rate was 3.4% in 2026M09. It is part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV metropolitan area (central county).
Loudoun County produced about $44,855 million of goods and services in 2024, which is 10.5% of the combined output of the 82 counties of Virginia that BEA reports (about 5.0% of the state's population lives here), and ranks it 2nd of 82 on that measure. Per resident that is $103,592, 111% above the state average; the average for all counties of the state taken together is $49,195. In current dollars output grew 6.8% from 2023 to 2024, before adjusting for inflation.
BLS counts 198,113 jobs located in Loudoun County on average in 2024, spread over 14,735 employer sites (about 13 jobs per site). That is 0.46 jobs for every resident, above the 0.34 of the typical county in Virginia, which tells you whether the county is a place people mostly commute to for work or a place they commute from. The average annual pay per job was $84,788, 12% above the average of all counties in the state ($84,788 against $75,556). Average pay is total wages divided by jobs, so it is pulled up by high earners and counts part-time jobs as whole jobs; it is not the pay of a typical worker. The number of jobs rose 4.8% from 2023 to 2024.
The three largest private industries are professional and technical services (15.4% of private jobs, $138,427 a year on average), construction (12.3% of private jobs, $94,913 a year on average), health care and social assistance (11.2% of private jobs, $65,894 a year on average). Together they hold 38.9% of private-sector jobs. Among industries with at least 3% of jobs, the best paying is information at $180,894 a year, followed by professional and technical services ($138,427). The county is specialised in several industries: construction (1.9 times the US share, 20,327 jobs); professional and technical services (1.9 times the US share, 25,546 jobs); transportation and warehousing (1.7 times the US share, 14,548 jobs). A location quotient above 1 means an industry employs a larger share of workers here than in the whole country, so these are the industries where local employers compete hardest for skills. Several of the biggest employers pay well below the county average: accommodation and food services ($33,270), retail trade ($40,840), transportation and warehousing ($59,230). Jobs there are plentiful but the pay is lower than the headline average suggests.
In 2026M09 the unemployment rate in Loudoun County was 3.4%, 7% below the average of the state's counties (3.4% against 3.6%). The labour force (people working or looking for work) numbered 244,202. Over the last 12 months it ranged from 3.2% (2025M09) to 3.8% (2026M01); the latest month is preliminary and BLS revises it. These county rates are not seasonally adjusted, so compare the same month across years.
The median household income was $181,765 (ACS 2020–2024), 95% above the state median ($181,765 against $93,170). The guide covers 7 cities with this as the main county: Leesburg, Ashburn, South Riding, Sterling, Brambleton, Stone Ridge, Broadlands. Open any of them for rent, home values, commuting and climate. Within the county, median rent runs from $2,105 in Leesburg to $2,905 in South Riding, so where you live matters as much as which county you pick.
