Ascension Parish is a county of Louisiana with 130,314 residents. Its economy produced $12,654 million in 2024 (ranked #9 of 64 counties) and had 50,590 jobs with an average annual pay of $71,805 (#7 for pay). The unemployment rate was 3.3% in 2026M09. It is part of the Baton Rouge, LA metropolitan area (central county).
Ascension Parish produced about $12,654 million of goods and services in 2024, which is 3.8% of the combined output of the 64 counties of Louisiana that BEA reports (about 2.8% of the state's population lives here), and ranks it 9th of 64 on that measure. Per resident that is $97,107, 36% above the state average; the average for all counties of the state taken together is $71,374. In current dollars output grew 6.6% from 2023 to 2024, before adjusting for inflation.
BLS counts 50,590 jobs located in Ascension Parish on average in 2024, spread over 3,919 employer sites (about 13 jobs per site). That is 0.39 jobs for every resident, above the 0.31 of the typical county in Louisiana, which tells you whether the county is a place people mostly commute to for work or a place they commute from. The average annual pay per job was $71,805, 18% above the average of all counties in the state ($71,805 against $60,637). Average pay is total wages divided by jobs, so it is pulled up by high earners and counts part-time jobs as whole jobs; it is not the pay of a typical worker. The number of jobs rose 3.3% from 2023 to 2024.
The three largest private industries are construction (21.7% of private jobs, $85,091 a year on average), manufacturing (17.0% of private jobs, $135,685 a year on average), retail trade (13.7% of private jobs, $34,778 a year on average). Together they hold 52.3% of private-sector jobs. Among industries with at least 3% of jobs, the best paying is manufacturing at $135,685 a year, followed by professional and technical services ($92,306). The county is specialised in several industries: construction (3.7 times the US share, 9,756 jobs); manufacturing (1.8 times the US share, 7,629 jobs). A location quotient above 1 means an industry employs a larger share of workers here than in the whole country, so these are the industries where local employers compete hardest for skills. Several of the biggest employers pay well below the county average: retail trade ($34,778), accommodation and food services ($21,325), health care and social assistance ($41,813). Jobs there are plentiful but the pay is lower than the headline average suggests.
In 2026M09 the unemployment rate in Ascension Parish was 3.3%, 13% below the average of the state's counties (3.3% against 3.8%). The labour force (people working or looking for work) numbered 70,024. Over the last 12 months it ranged from 3.1% (2026M08) to 4.1% (2026M06); the latest month is preliminary and BLS revises it. These county rates are not seasonally adjusted, so compare the same month across years.
The median household income was $91,549 (ACS 2020–2024), 51% above the state median ($91,549 against $60,756). The guide covers 2 cities with this as the main county: Prairieville, Gonzales. Open any of them for rent, home values, commuting and climate. Within the county, median rent runs from $1,324 in Prairieville to $1,497 in Gonzales, so where you live matters as much as which county you pick.
