Suffolk County is a county of Massachusetts with 785,121 residents. Its economy produced $190,778 million in 2024 (ranked #2 of 14 counties) and had 713,809 jobs with an average annual pay of $131,280 (#1 for pay). The unemployment rate was 4.2% in 2026M09. It is part of the Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH metropolitan area (central county).
Suffolk County produced about $190,778 million of goods and services in 2024, which is 24.5% of the combined output of the 14 counties of Massachusetts that BEA reports (about 11.1% of the state's population lives here), and ranks it 2nd of 14 on that measure. Per resident that is $242,992, 120% above the state average; the average for all counties of the state taken together is $110,522. In current dollars output grew 6.2% from 2023 to 2024, before adjusting for inflation.
BLS counts 713,809 jobs located in Suffolk County on average in 2024, spread over 33,364 employer sites (about 21 jobs per site). That is 0.91 jobs for every resident, above the 0.44 of the typical county in Massachusetts, which tells you whether the county is a place people mostly commute to for work or a place they commute from. The average annual pay per job was $131,280, 39% above the average of all counties in the state ($131,280 against $94,544). Average pay is total wages divided by jobs, so it is pulled up by high earners and counts part-time jobs as whole jobs; it is not the pay of a typical worker. The number of jobs rose 0.4% from 2023 to 2024.
The three largest private industries are health care and social assistance (24.2% of private jobs, $96,483 a year on average), professional and technical services (15.7% of private jobs, $207,925 a year on average), finance and insurance (10.6% of private jobs, $292,534 a year on average). Together they hold 50.6% of private-sector jobs. Among industries with at least 3% of jobs, the best paying is finance and insurance at $292,534 a year, followed by professional and technical services ($207,925). The county is specialised in several industries: educational services (3.0 times the US share, 44,579 jobs); finance and insurance (2.3 times the US share, 67,187 jobs); professional and technical services (2.0 times the US share, 99,564 jobs). A location quotient above 1 means an industry employs a larger share of workers here than in the whole country, so these are the industries where local employers compete hardest for skills. Several of the biggest employers pay well below the county average: accommodation and food services ($44,830), retail trade ($62,157). Jobs there are plentiful but the pay is lower than the headline average suggests.
In 2026M09 the unemployment rate in Suffolk County was 4.2%, about the same as the average of the state's counties (4.2% against 4.1%). The labour force (people working or looking for work) numbered 465,838. Over the last 12 months it ranged from 4.0% (2026M04) to 4.9% (2026M01); the latest month is preliminary and BLS revises it. These county rates are not seasonally adjusted, so compare the same month across years.
The median household income was $95,631 (ACS 2020–2024), 8% below the state median ($95,631 against $103,960). Within the county, median rent runs from $1,956 in Chelsea to $2,147 in Boston, so where you live matters as much as which county you pick.
