Greene County is a county of North Carolina with 20,486 residents. Its economy produced $626 million in 2024 (ranked #86 of 100 counties) and had 4,501 jobs with an average annual pay of $48,291 (#56 for pay). The unemployment rate was 2.8% in 2026M09.
Greene County produced about $626 million of goods and services in 2024, which is 0.1% of the combined output of the 100 counties of North Carolina that BEA reports (about 0.2% of the state's population lives here), and ranks it 86th of 100 on that measure. Per resident that is $30,574, 61% below the state average; the average for all counties of the state taken together is $78,674. In current dollars output grew 11.4% from 2023 to 2024, before adjusting for inflation.
BLS counts 4,501 jobs located in Greene County on average in 2024, spread over 380 employer sites (about 12 jobs per site). That is 0.22 jobs for every resident, below the 0.33 of the typical county in North Carolina, which tells you whether the county is a place people mostly commute to for work or a place they commute from. The average annual pay per job was $48,291, 27% below the average of all counties in the state ($48,291 against $66,360). Average pay is total wages divided by jobs, so it is pulled up by high earners and counts part-time jobs as whole jobs; it is not the pay of a typical worker. The number of jobs fell 0.9% from 2023 to 2024.
The three largest private industries are health care and social assistance (25.5% of private jobs, $45,041 a year on average), retail trade (15.6% of private jobs, $33,701 a year on average), construction (14.9% of private jobs, $56,996 a year on average). Together they hold 56.1% of private-sector jobs. Among industries with at least 3% of jobs, the best paying is construction at $56,996 a year, followed by real estate and rental ($55,720). Several of the biggest employers pay well below the county average: retail trade ($33,701). Jobs there are plentiful but the pay is lower than the headline average suggests.
In 2026M09 the unemployment rate in Greene County was 2.8%, 10% below the average of the state's counties (2.8% against 3.1%). The labour force (people working or looking for work) numbered 8,511. Over the last 12 months it ranged from 2.8% (2026M09) to 3.7% (2026M07); the latest month is preliminary and BLS revises it. These county rates are not seasonally adjusted, so compare the same month across years.
The median household income was $53,244 (ACS 2020–2024), 26% below the state median ($53,244 against $72,388). None of the largest places of the guide has this as its main county, which usually means a smaller or more rural county; the figures above still describe the whole county.
Counties close to Greene County in output are Mitchell County, Madison County, Yancey County, Caswell County. Compare their jobs, pay and unemployment on their own pages.
